Native American Student Photographers go to NYC: Pt2 Hotel

We need to show the rest of the world our own stories of who we are, where we come from, and where we are going. We need to see, exhibit, meet, learn, and collaborate.

About My Students

We are 12 students and 6 staff from a small high school raising funds for our dream trip. The Flathead Reservation is a lot of things, but it is not like New York. This trip is not a vacation, but a deep dive into the world of professional photography in a new cultural context—from rural to urban!

This group of students has been studying photography at Two Eagle River School for the past 1–3 years with David Spear, a photo instructor at Salish Kootenai College, the tribal college next door. He is a long-time New Yorker, professional photographer, and former instructor at New York University and the International Center for Photography. Students are part of his special photography class called “Our Community Record,” collaborating with his local non-profit, A VOICE: Art Vision and Outreach in Community Education. They are studying art photography, documentary, and photojournalism, plus shooting manual SLR cameras and making images with traditional black and white darkroom processes.

While at home in Montana students can study images, hear stories, and make their own work in the school’s darkroom, but in New York they will learn from professional photographers, editors, curators, and university instructors. They will build peer-to-peer relationships with NY high school photographers, with whom they will visit historic museums, photograph the city, and even publicly exhibit their own work at the Lower East Side Girls Club. This trip will expand their experience as young photographers and learners, and give them a huge advantage when we return home. We have already arranged meetings with photographers, editors, curators, and professors at the following organizations: + Aperture Magazine + Gallery + Bronx Documentary Photography Center + International Center for Photography + Magnum Photo + MOMA Permanent Collection of Photography + New York Times + NYU Tisch School of the Arts + Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian + Plus additional independent photographers

In Their Own Words

For us, photos are a way of communicating beyond the boundaries of the reservation where we live. Photography will be our hobby, our major, and maybe even our career. With images, we can tell the rest of the world unbiased stories of who we are, where we come from, and where we are going. It’s not enough for the world to see our story and culture through the interpretation of strangers. With images, we can bring New York back home, and tell its stories, here.

We have been part of designing this trip from the beginning. This month we are presenting our photos to Tribal Council to request trip funding. We will host a community dinner and auction at school next month to raise more funds. We will exhibit our work on walls in NY next to photos made by NY high school students. We will document our entire trip with original photographs and video. During and after the trip, we will self-publish our photos on a website to share with our community.

This project is a way to show other people—outsiders—our culture through images instead of words. We meet a lot of people who are interested in the reservation and our culture, but we would prefer that they learn about it from us than through books or movies. We don't show ourselves in stereotypes. We take pictures of what interests us, so our photos can teach about how we experience the world. The things we will notice in New York will be very different than what a New Yorker photographs.
