My Students

Think back to social studies class. Typically it was, and is, done through books and articles. We are working towards becoming researchers who study the past with excitement. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."

Our third grade students participate in a magnet school program.

This means that they come from many communities around our state. Our goal is to improve the quality of education for all learners. We work to meet the needs of our diverse students by supporting them in any way we can. With many diverse communities, this can include providing extra food or clothing, supporting learning outside of the classroom and teaching parents how to work with their children.

My Project

My students need support to attend our field trip to the Mystic Seaport to research Connecticut whaling communities. This field trip will be the culminating activity for our unit about industry and economy. This unit focuses on whaling and its importance to our state. The main goal of social studies is learning how to understand people and cultures that are different from ours. Students will be spending time examining the past to understand what happens today. We are hoping that students learn the causes and effects of different periods of history and what we can all learn from it! After this field trip, students will be able to explain probable causes and effects of events and developments and how they affect our world today. Students will be able to research a significant event or invention in our state history that has changed the way we live today.

First-hand experiences are amazingly effective.

This field trip will instill a curiosity and understanding about our state's past. This is extremely important because it helps students understand the world around them. This trip will provide them with hands-on learning that we cannot provide with a book in the classroom. Students will be able to ask questions and explore the seaport to find the answers. It is very important that students learn to inquire so that they will become active citizens.
