My Students

"And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected." -J.Steinbeck This quote perfectly articulates the message I want to send my students.

Our school is a diverse, high-poverty school with a student body of over 1,700.

More than 100 of our students are homeless. I work 70 hours per week on average, but unfortunately, this is not enough to meet my students' academic needs. You see, our school is grossly underfunded and does not have enough books for its large population of students. I currently teach 148 students, but our school may only have a total of 10 copies of any given novel. And this is if we even have a particular novel, which most time we don't. The books we do have are old, falling apart, and are not even of appropriate reading level. Many of the novels in our inventory are typically read in elementary or middle school. My students may not be privileged, but they are smart and are hungry for something interesting to read.

My Project

My students will be engaged as they read novels by John Steinbeck, one of the best writers of all time. Tenth graders will read East of Eden during our literature unit entitled, "Good vs. Evil." Some essential questions asked during this unit are: Are humans innately sinful/evil? To what extent do we control our moral development/ moral choices? What makes a complex character? How do we identify the meaning of a work as a whole? Ninth graders will read, Of Mice and Men. Some essential questions are: How is the "American Dream" defined? Is it the same for everyone? Was it the same in the 1930s as it is for current society? How is everyone handicapped? What is the relationship between decisions and consequences? How do we know how to make good decisions? To what extent does society shape an individual's understanding of happiness? Why does happiness seem so elusive for many people? We will also study theme, allusion, tone, and voice, as well as write essays and engage in Socratic seminars.

Donations to this project will directly and immediately make a positive difference in the lives of underprivileged adolescents and their education.

They will know that people care enough to invest in them.
