My Students
Have you ever wanted a book at the library and then found out there were 20 other people in front of you waiting? This is the frustration my students had this year when we read Percy Jackson as a read aloud. They Loved the book and wanted to follow along, but we only had one copy.
Our school has a very limited budget.
So limited that we have trouble buying paper for the copier and pencils for the students. My students come from very poor homes that struggle with necessities. When I began reading this book many of my students wanted to go purchase the book themselves but were unable to. They connected to Percy Jackson, the fantasy, and adventure. It allowed them to pretend, for 30 minutes a day, that they were super human and could face anything.
My Project
I have never seen a group of students get so excited about a book in my career. By allowing each student to have a book they can read, and re-read, it will not only inspire them to dream, more importantly it will inspire them to read! This past year it was a read aloud, and will remain that way. However, if they each have their own book I can have them discuss it in their literature circles, and also complete more in depth projects around the story. Their favorite part was watching the movie and comparing the two. It was wonderful to hear them saying "But the book was so much better!".
This book created a community of readers with interest and passion for a common book.
Kids that never spoke to each other before were excited to talk about the story! Please donate to my project and become a part of something truly special for 30 kids. Allow them the opportunity to become entranced and pulled into the world of Percy Jackson on their own time, and at their own pace. Your donation today will help my students own books that they never could have obtained without your help.
