Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"My what big eyes you have..." Do you remember when your parents read a book to you accompanied by their animation of the characters along with the warmth we felt within their embrace? How about audio story books(cassette or even vinyl)? Most of my students have yet to experience such a phenomena.
"Science is facts; just as houses are made of stone, so is science made of facts; but a pile of stone is not a house, and a collection of facts is not necessarily science" - Jules Henri Poincare.
How applicable this quote appears to be with my mixed ability science students. Just reading aloud with little one-on-one interaction is overwhelming when my students are not able to keep up due to the fact many fall within two to three reading levels below their grade. From my observations, I see this approach is much like dumping a bunch of science vocabulary and facts (stones)in hopes of a house coming out of them. Which in reality, looks far from a house but instead just a pile of stones. I teach science to grades 3-5 in the state of Texas where everything is bigger, especially when it comes to my students' hearts. My lab rats enter their classroom eagerly and cheerfully everyday, in spite of any challenging disabilities they may encounter and their economically disadvantaged demographics.
My Project
I want to position and set up my students for success, with the initiation of a computer software science library center. The software utilizes literacy and personal read aloud and highlighter options accompanied with graphics, sounds and music. Also included are assessments the student can take at their own pace without the stress of whole group testing. In providing my students with this engaging and enriching resource, students will increase in literacy and comprehension of the extensive and hard to grasp science vocabulary. Granted it's not Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa reading to them, but they will notice the time and attention given. And boy do they notice. It's amazing what my students produce when they realize the investment established for them.
Here's some statistics from "PISA", the U.S.
ranks 17th in the world and 29th in the U.S. in the "Nation's Report Card". Okay it is a little disheartening, so what am I determined to do, provide my students with the utmost quality teaching and resources. My lab rats will become better readers, learn hard to grasp science concepts, because everyone can learn. My students will feel successful, confident and enter their classroom with a smile.
