Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the hardest things about teaching music is trying to teach students about the musical staff, how it works, and what each line means. What if that staff were larger than life and you were able to touch, tap, and play on it? We would get into so much treble!

I'm fortunate to work with about 500 brilliant, elementary students on a daily basis.

We go to a large urban school in a fairly low-income neighborhood. The vast majority of my students come from families where English is not their main medium for communication and yet they strive to excel in math and reading and many are fluent in both languages. Though my students come from a low SES background, they are innovative and creative, not letting boundaries stop them. Music gives my students an outlet to create and innovate and takes hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.

My Project

This "footnotes" rug would be a game changer in the music room. First, we need it for its function as a rug. We would use it as a place to sit or play, somewhere to put things, with a seating chart/placement, or just as an area that's defined as different from the rest of the room. More importantly, we could use it for the content ON the rug. Learning about the musical staff is hard for students because in a book or song its a 2d abstract thing. This "footnotes" rug makes the musical staff is so big and real. It literally allows students to turn their feet into notes. I can already think of all the activities and opportunities for concept reinforcement. I could tell students, "put your right foot on the G" or "drop your beanbag on the A." Activities like this make what is usually so abstract become real and tangible. Other music teachers with this rug tell me that when they transfer the skill from the rug to a book or paper that students understand so much better.

My students love music and strive to become better with each activity.

As English Language Learners they struggle and shy away from any activity where they are asked to read or write. This rug would be a transformative tool to help them feel confident about reading music and understanding the staff. I can't imagine them being anything but ecstatic about playing on this rug and learning very difficult content along the way.
