My Students

Music is my life! I love teaching music to my 600 students, ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade. I travel between three schools and feel very lucky to teach in a district where music is still important. I am grateful to have a music room with instruments, now we just need to add some technology.

My students are curious, energetic, enthusiastic, caring, and many of them just simply love music class.

The younger students enjoy singing lots of songs, exploring our Orff instruments, move and dance to music using scarves and bean bags, and discover new things about music. The older students have fun playing the recorder, preparing concerts, love singing in the Honors Choir, and are eager to learn about music around the world, various styles, and different time periods. I enjoy introducing them to music, giving them a glimpse into this vast art form, and hope to instill in them a life-long love and open-mindedness for music of any kind.

My Project

Technology can open so many doors for students - also in music class. Students love working on iPads. There are an incredible amount of great music apps available. The mini iPads would allow students in K-2nd grade to explore the instruments of the orchestra in small groups, to compose music with interactive apps, listen immediately to what they have composed, engage directly with rhythm and steady beat exercises. The mini iPads would be especially beneficial to my students in 3rd-5th grade. The many fun and motivational apps would allow students to practice their note reading, execute timed, short note reading and other music theory tests, receive immediate results and assessment at test completion, compose music with "looper" apps using layering, texture, and accompaniment techniques, record mini performances and projects.

The four mini iPads would bring our total to seven mini iPads in the music room, which would allow students to work in groups of 4 (most classes have 30 students in a class).

Students with different learning styles and learning speeds can have a more individualized instruction. Students can receive extra time to practice certain skills on the mini iPads, allowing them to succeed at their own comfortable speed. The mini iPads allow students to have a different outlet for their musical creativity.
