This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember classic fairy tales being read to you as a young child? The youngsters at our school love exciting stories with lots of action. It would be wonderful to have every kindergarten classroom teaching coordinated units using varieties of gingerbread stories.

My students are exceptionally bright and eager to learn.

English is not their first language so they need many rich literary experiences to improve their reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills. My school is also a Title I poverty school. Some of the kids don't have opportunities to read classic fairy tales at home because their parents have to buy food. Being read to helps increase their vocabulary dramatically, especially when they have the chance to compare multiple versions of stories from a wide range of cultures around the world.

My Project

The Runaway Rice Cake, The Musubi Man, The Runaway Pancake, and other diverse books that I have chosen for the will help students learn about other societies, compare and contrast information about various people and locations around the world, create Venn diagrams to analyze pairs of stories, and ask higher-level questions. The students will write about their favorite stories and characters through drawings and invented spelling. The students will act out and retell these stories to enhance their understanding of plot, character, and setting.

These books will enormously increase my students' knowledge of character, setting, plot, geography, and traditions from cultures around the world.

The stories that I chose represent Australia, China, Hawaii, and more. These books will also spark conversations about city life vs. country life, and get students talking to each other about their favorite gingerbread characters. The more language my students acquire in kindergarten, the more successful they will be throughout their lives
