Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students live on a "frontera," or border, both culturally and with regards to their literacy. By providing them with reading material that is both engaging and relevant, we will help our students transcend this hurdle so that they may become avid and fluent college-bound readers in English.
Our students attend a school where 98% of families are economically disadvantaged and 83% are English Language Learners.
The challenges that face our students are both linguistic and socioeconomic. Proper literacy instruction is essential to our students' lives so that they may gain social mobility and become productive citizens of the US. Unfortunately, the majority of our students read below grade level and have not experienced a culture of literacy or, quite simply, the joys of reading. However, while these statistics may paint a negative portrait of the condition of our students, they starkly contrast with the potential advantage they have by developing bilingual literacy. Our predominantly first-generation immigrant students' success is precluded by their grasp of Spanish, but particularly, of English. Yet, that very obstacle is easily converted into a strength through engaging literacy instruction that is complemented by culturally and academically relevant classroom literature.
My Project
Developing bilingual literacy requires a range of genres, themes, and reading levels. Therefore, the resources that I am requesting include two different class sets of magazines that contain high-quality non-fiction and that are linked with Common Core instructional materials. Complementing the magazines' articles of varying complexity, graphics, and text features, will be close reading questions, text-marking activities, and various comprehension writing prompts. Most importantly, the magazines will strengthen my students' reading skills while imbuing them with a genuine love of reading and learning.
In addition to the magazines, this project will enable my students to read multicultural books that are socially relevant and engaging. Such books will not only further strengthen and develop students' reading skills, but will also permit my students to gain a deeper understanding of their heritage and feel confident that despite their challenges, they too can go to college.
Last year, my classroom simply lacked books; this deficiency negatively impacted my students' passion for learning.
This project will make a significant impact on immersing my students in a print-rich environment in which they can grow as readers and adopt the love of reading as a norm for their lives. A carpet with an easel pad will allow us to have a reading center where thoughts are produced and shared with the class. This project is vital to their success as confident college-bound readers.
