Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Creating art based on history and world cultures gives students a purpose to their art making. Through creation of art, my students learn about different people, places and times. With a department budget cut in half, students will not have basic materials they need for many projects.
My students are amazing!
I am lucky enough to teach a range of students in grades 2-7. They are all the type of students who are excited to learn, create and express themselves. My students have had to use the same boring crayons and markers that do not accurately represent their skin tones. Our school is a charter school in Utah where the students have the opportunity to enjoy an art education, unlike many schools. However, this year our department budget was deeply cut. Many materials that I had planned to use to enhance the students multicultural education needed to be removed from the budget. I believe that the art curriculum the students receive is extraordinary. They learn about a variety of cultures and artists through their art making. These projects instill an appreciation for world history and peoples and I think that these materials would help them in creating.
My Project
Students in every grade will use these materials to create self portraits that accurately depict their skin colors, mosaics depicting side profiles of people from around the world, stained glass windows that will show a variety of people from history and more! Simply having accurate skin toned crayons will help students draw and color their families and themselves! I think it is important that all students' skin tones are represented in the classroom.
Please contribute to this project!
These materials will help students feel good about their artwork and themselves! We will be able to make projects that enhance students' learning across the curriculum because of YOU!
