My students need two read-along books/listening sets, 30 subscriptions to Scholastics News Magazines, and 12 boxes for books to improve the implementation and organization of literacy centers.

My Students
Each and everyday, a 1st grader in Ms. H's class is given the opportunity to develop their love and passion for reading through different literacy centers set up in her room. Students look forward to their daily literacy centers-and its no wonder! They are blossoming into enthusiastic readers!
My bright young students come from a predominantly low to middle income Hispanic neighborhood.
Their families share in our passion about providing the best education of their students.
Our school provides students and their families many opportunities to grow in many different aspects! Because first grade is one of the most important years in terms of growth in literacy, I have literacy curriculum nights quarterly, explaining to parents how students are learning how to read and what should be expected in terms of progress and growth, and finally, helping parents understand the best ways they can help their child at home.
My Project
With the materials that I have requested through DonorsChoose, our literacy centers will be significantly updated and enhanced. With the Scholastic News subscription, my students will participate in a daily Current Events center, in which they will explore a variety of currently events affecting kids in the United States and around the world. With the read-along books/ CDs, our listening center will be updated with new literature. The listening center increases comprehension of our young readers, an essential skill need to become a good reader! Struggling readers especially benefit from this center, listening to someone else fluently read their favorite literature. Finally, the book bins will be used to organize the ever-expanding classroom library!
Donations to this project will improve my classroom by expanding the foundational basis already set in place by literacy centers!
Developing a love and passion for reading is one of the most important experiences that I can provide for my students. In return, their love and passion will expand into lifelong learning, creating highly literate citizens of our society--the future!
