My students need a selection of modern and classic science literature, like "The Hot Zone" and "A Really Short History of Nearly Everything," to inspire science aspirations and modern literacy skills.

My Students
Science literature can be interesting, thought provoking, and ultimately inspiring to students. Science textbooks are a great starting point of information, but many students have not been exposed to alternate forms of science writing. I hope to both inspire my students through voluntary choice of modern and classic biological science literature as well as promote literacy through science.
My students are a wonderful group with very diverse interests.
They attend a competitive high school that fosters the idea of everyone finding their strength. These students are always looking to explore, try, and learn. From early morning surf competitions to weekend policy debates, my students bring the most incredible stories of adventure to my classroom. Since they share so many wonderful experiences with me, I always strive to give great science experiences in return.
My Project
With the upcoming implementation of the California Common Core Standards (CCCS), and the need for science literacy, a classroom library will help to accomplish the objectives outlined by the CCCS Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects Grades 9-10. For example, standard 6 states that students should be able to "ÂÂanalyze the author'Âs purpose in providing an explanation, describing a procedure, or discussing an experiment in a text, defining the question the author seeks to address."ÂÂ While this could be achieved with the classroom textbook, a classroom library will expand the resources available to students. Research has also shown that providing a classroom library and creating lessons surrounding voluntary choice reading helps promote literacy skills. Ultimately students will reap the benefits of science texts written for their level and meeting their various interests.
In the words of Oscar Wilde, "It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it." A classroom library will give my students choice in what they read and thus open up opportunities for their interests and paths in life, through science.
