Mrs. Sullivan & the 5th grade Farming Service Project

My students need seeds, growing medium, grow kits, a composter, a watering system, soil, a soil thermometer, and a grow light. An outdoor greenhouse is great for Spring.

My Students

A goal for my 5th graders is opening their minds & hearts through service learning. Our project is to grow & donate crops to local food bank. We need seeds, growing medium, grow kits, a composter, a watering system, soil, a soil thermometer, outdoor greenhouse, & a grow light. Help us service others!

The students from this part of town all have different stories but one thing that brings us together is a sense of community in our school.

If my students walk away with one thing this year, I want them to realize how important it is to pay it forward. Many families in this part of town know what it's like to live without. If I can help make my students become more aware of the blessings that they have and how to be thankful for the many things that they have in their lives,I would like them to also be able to see how important it is to give back and service those in need. In an attempt to achieve this goal, the students and I will be working diligently to grow crops that we will be able to donate to the town Food Bank. I'm hoping that this act of kindness will help the students to realize the good they are doing and I'm hopeful that the act of paying it forward will continue even after they graduate 5th grade.

My Project

The students have already begun researching the different types of crops that we will be planting. I already taken it upon myself to purchase seeds and growing medium to get the ball rolling and to allow the students an opportunity to get their feet wet with growing crops indoors. With the materials that are listed, we can only have more success in reaching our goal of servicing those who visit the food bank. In addition to learning acts of kindness and service to others in need, the students are learning cross curricular concepts in Science and Language Arts Literacy as well. Students will be creating booklets using their research and information they have gathered in accordance with the crops that we will be growing. They will experiment and continue to observe the crops, determining what needs to be done in order to achieve success in growing as much as we can.

I feel that any donations to this project will greatly enhance instruction and achievement of success.

The materials will help the students to achieve our service learning goal and it will change their lives by enabling them to see how much of a difference they can truly make for those who are in need in their very own community.
