My Students

My students come from the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. Though it is known as one of the most picturesque and naturally beautiful places in America, it is also has very limited educational opportunities and poverty is prevalent. But these have not dimmed my students' desire to learn.

My goal is to provide to my students with "hands on" and life changing experiences that go beyond the walls of the classroom.

My students love their home but I want them to know that the world is bigger than the mountains where we live. Let's go exploring!

My Project

Students from the mountains of western North Carolina will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a marine biologist. Some of our students have never even seen a beach or the ocean before so this will be a life changing experience for them! Florida State University's Coastal and Marine Laboratory will give our students opportunities and experiences that they can only imagine... or may not have even imagined. Who is to say that next Jacques Cousteau, Charles Darwin, or Barbara Block isn't in this group? Maybe we will be able to answer the question: Do the best marine biologists really come from the mountains? YES!
