Mount Saint Helens Summer Camp

My students need non fiction books to further their understanding of the geology/geography of the Mount Saint Helens area. In addition, we would like to record our trip with a camera.

My Students

Have you ever been hiking or camping? To the mountains? How about to an active volcano? Many of our students do not have these opportunities. Some have never left their neighborhood. This would be an amazing, eye opening experience for many of our students.

Students at our school attend a school with great diversity ethnically and economically.

Almost half of our students are in poverty. Many parents work multiple jobs to try to provide a better life for their children. We are in our second year of transforming into a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) focus school. Our parents, community, and staff are excited about this opportunity for the children.

My Project

This summer, as a part of our STEM focus, we are offering for the first time a three night/four day Mt. St. Helens Camp. The focus of this trip will be vulcanology and the geography of the Mt. St. Helens area. This will be a highly educational and experiential trip unlike any. We are planning this trip for 11 kids going into fifth, sixth, or seventh grade from our school. This will be an exciting trip! We will be exploring the base of Mt. St. Helens, climbing Mt. St. Helens, exploring the longest continuous lava tube in the US (Ape Caves) and visiting all of the interpretive centers on St. Helens. Over the course of the trip we will be camping in three different locations. Having non-fiction books and the GoPro camera will enhance this trip. The non-fiction books will give students further background on Mount Saint Helens. The GoPro will put technology into the hands of kids. They will then use the video footage of their trip to make a video to share with our school.

Having support from donorschoose.org will add to the educational experience of this trip.

The non-fiction text will further their understanding of Mount Saint Helens. It will bring reading alive by having the opportunity to read about it and see it first hand. We are a STEM school. The 'T' in STEM stands for technology. Having the GoPro will put technology into the hands of many underprivileged kids. After our trip, kids will use this camera to create a video diary of the trip.
