Easels may seem like old news in light of all the technological advances available to teachers these days. Compared to computers and interactive learning games an easel may seem too basic, but sometimes basic is needed as a starting point for future learning.
I have 24 students in my kindergarten classroom.
They are eager to learn and love to get in front of the class and write on my small magnetic dry erase board. That is why I'm asking for the easel, since it is much larger and is mobile it will be a great asset to my class. My school is a low socio-economic school with the majority of students on free or reduced lunch.
The easel, dry erase markers, and storage bins for storage will be used daily during our "Morning Message". The easel will be used interactively with my children. Easels provide a unique sensory experience for the students. Physically, easels work both large and small muscles. Kindergarteners are still developing their motor skills. Generally, children develop their large muscles first, followed by small muscles and hand-eye coordination. Antsy children who do not like to sit for very long will appreciate the extra work involved in standing while participating in class. An easel is a helpful tool to enhance any lesson or demonstration. The dry erase easel is a great tool for giving interactive presentations. With my kindergarten students that are beginning to write the easel will be a great tool for the Morning Message and shared writing. The double sided, board is perfect for creative classroom teaching and writing. When used with the whiteboard markers their ideas come to life as quick as they can write them. Of course, they can disappear as easily with one swipe of an eraser.
The truth is, kindergarten students learn best by doing and an easel provides a way for students to practice several different important writing skills.
It also provides them with the opportunity to be actively involved in their learning and to see how the other children write as well.
