More Than Just a Station--It's Independence!!

My students need task chairs, markers, and pencil grips to help them utilize our work stations in the dyslexia classroom.

My Students

On any given day in my classroom, you will see dyslexic students learning to read, process, and remember written information, while building self-confidence in their intelligence and abilities.

My dyslexic students are the brightest, kindest, and hardest working students you will find anywhere!

We are in a high socioeconomic area, and our PTA is very generous with projects for the campus. Our program involves 30-40 students each year--a small group on campus. My students are working to learn to decode words, but they are also learning to spell, write, organize their thoughts, share their ideas verbally and in writing, and finding ways to show what they really know without their dyslexia interfering. They start our program very dependent on me to help them with strategies, but as time goes on and they internalize their new skills, we reach for independence. In an effort to encourage that independence, we are using 15 work stations in our room. There stations promote independent use of coding, spelling, comprehension, writing, organization, and self-expression. We have all the activities; now, we just need materials to make the activities more efficient.

My Project

Students will use their task chairs to move between all 15 stations as they work. They will be able to roll their work folders and materials with them to work and turn in locations. The movement allowed in the task chairs also aids with attention deficits and the need for movement--which 50% of all dyslexics require. Dry erase markers are used for lessons, practicing coding and spelling, and completing handwriting, spelling, and alphabet activities. The smoothness of the felt tips can help with the neurological impress of cursive writing, and the colors help my visual learners internalize syllable patterns in words. Pencil grips are critical for our work on writing. Fine motor can be an issue with dyslexic students. The effort it takes to put thoughts on paper can exhaust a student mentally, and the physical exhaustion from a poor grip can often prevent them from finishing activities.

When a student is dyslexic, they are smart, but don't feel like it.

They struggle with print and written concepts. In our class, we work to improve our reading and writing skills, but we also work to improve our self-image. Giving my students the task chairs, markers, and grips will give them the opportunity to increase their independence in class, which will carry through to all other classes. It gives them the chance to feel like they can do anything, and they can--with some help!
