My Students

Every Monday, my students come in to our classroom eager to find out if they were "hired" for the job they applied for during the previous week. As they perform classroom jobs for their wages, they often ask, "Are we getting paid today? Is the store open today?"

My students are a group of active, inquisitive, and hands-on learners who attend an open concept, Title I school.

They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and life experiences. However, the majority of my students have a limited experience with money.

My Project

Throughout the week, each student performs a job that contributes to the running of our classroom learning. On Fridays, students visit our student banker to receive their check. They then visit our store and make purchases with the money that they have earned. Students help each other record their earnings and expenses in their bank books. If we received these materials, the cash registers would be operated by my student banker and student cashier as they pay and check out other students. The coins manipulatives would be used to make money exchanges more hands on for all students, especially those struggling with money identification, addition, and subtraction. The book about money would be placed in our classroom library to build students' reading skills and background knowledge about money.

Receiving these materials would empower each of my students to be financially literate.

Through real-life exchanges of money manipulatives, students would build important skills such as addition and subtraction in a engaging, relevant context.
