My Students

My third and fourth graders only get to spend one hour a day in our classroom. When twenty creative, imaginative, curious, motivated, inspired, and excited students all need access to a digital tool to enrich and accelerate their learning, and can't get to one, learning is paused. We share, but need more access.

My students are eager learners with a thirst for knowledge.

They are inquisitive, and when we are on the hunt for answers, it is frustrating not to have access. Their learning transcends our classroom walls and with the tools they need, they take their education to independent levels. It is amazing to watch them use a technology tool to create and share what they learn. It is rewarding for them to have the tools they need to self-extend their learning because they do not need an assignment to discover new things.

My Project

We are very grateful to have the tools we already have and we put them to good use each day. iPads are particular favorites because we can use them to look up information as we need it, use productivity and creativity apps such as Educreations and bContext to share what we discover, and camera functions to record and share our monologues. Also, iPads offer educational apps to practice and develop skills (and to evaluate as well on the basis of higher level thinking according to Bloom's Revised Taxonomy), to record and review discussions with apps like iTalk and GarageBand, scan QR codes, and many more uses. The challenge is that we have many minds that need to have access to a device and since we only spend an hour together. Waiting for a turn often means that a great idea or inquiry goes unfulfilled. With iPads, my students are learning to be self-directed and motivated learners. They are learning to access information they need independently as well as share their learning with others.

A student that has the tool he needs when he needs it, knows no limitations.

My students are just starting to realize their potential by sharing the tools we have. I cannot change the amount of time that they spend in my classroom, but by ensuring that my students have access to what they need when they need it, I can ensure that the time they spend in my classroom allows them to reach their potential without any restrictions.
