Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of the challenges students face when they enter high school are how to deal with the challenges of academics, organization, and socialization. They often have not developed skills that help them cope with frustration, anger, or fear in a positive way. Mindfulness education provides these tools.
My students attend a Chicago Public High School on the South Side.
The demographic is 50% African American and 50% Hispanic. All students receive free or reduced lunch due to a low income status. Most students perform below grade level. They become easily frustrated with academic and organizational challenges, and often shut down completely or become angry and violent.
Socially, students "posture" themselves when they are fearful or intimidated by another student or classroom situation. These events turn the focus from learning, to managing inappropriate responses and behaviors.
Mindfulness education teaches students how to stay focused on what really matters both inside and out of the classroom. Skills such as breathing, imagery, relaxation, and meditation give students positive options and healthy reactive choices.
My Project
In homeroom, the students will begin the day with mindfulness exercises. We will be in a cleared space on the floor, with no one person above or below another. With lights dimmed, we will begin the semester with guided practices. Students will learn a variety of practices borrowed from experts in the emerging field of mindfulness education such as Meena Srinivasan (Teach, Breathe, Learn), and Flor Rotne (Everybody "Present"?). The CD player will be used for guided practice and relaxing instrumentals. We will enjoy using the mats and curriculum guides.
The goal is to create a new kind of school culture that counters negative actions, and facilitates learning by planting seeds of mindfulness and developing positive coping skills that students can use both inside and outside the classroom.
