My students need measuring tape to be able to measure fabrics in order to cut them to the correct size for their Fiber, Fabric, Fashion class projects. They also need cutting mats.

My Students

Art is more than unleashing one's creativity. Art can help illustrate how math and science can be applied in real life situations. Teaching students to use a wide variety of tools used for measuring will help them save valuable supplies and improve their geometry skills.

My students are urban, inner city children who travel from all over the city to attend our high school.

They are enthusiastic to learn new skills. By being exposed to a wide range of electives, they are able to explore their interests in areas such as the arts.

My Project

About 120 students have signed up for a new elective called Fiber, Fabric & Fashion. They will create a variety of projects using textiles. Students will learn to measure correctly using tape measures and cutting mats. By demonstrating the use of these two different approaches, students will see that it is easy to save resources by measuring twice- then cutting just once. Projects will include creation of quilt designs and books for holding needles.

Measuring is important for any art project, but mistakes made by measuring fabrics incorrectly can be costly.

Students gain the added benefit by re-learning how to correctly use measuring tools.
