Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Art and math are fundamentally creative and humanistic enterprises. They are lenses through which we can see the world better. And I want my students to love art and math as I do!
Our school is a community school offering a comprehensive college preparatory program focusing on science, mathematics, and technology.
The ratio of economically disadvantaged students is over 80%.
Our students are brilliant! Business Week magazine named our school as a Top High School in the State of Oklahoma in Best Overall Academic Performance and Best Low Income School category.
You can do a great deal to make school a meaningful haven for my atudents by donating the materials we need for my class. Let's change the lives of these students!
My Project
It is very important that a hands-on approach is taken in learning math. These hands-on activities will help spark students` interest in math by using a hands-on art project.
My students need photo paper, craft glue, house paint, paintbrushes, candlewicks, wire, jam jars, paraffin flakes, and stoves to work hands-on a project called Sparking Interest in Math with Art-Archimedean Solid Candles.
Creating an interesting geometric object from an ordinary letter envelope is a metaphor for what can be accomplished in a math classroom - ideas can be presented in ways that will intrigue students, encourage them to experiment with geometry and understand its internal structure and its connections to the real world.
Economically disadvantaged students have a very difficult time with succeeding in school.
One of the most unfortunate results of their economic struggles is that students who live in poverty often drop out of school, choosing a low-paying job to pay for the luxuries they have been denied, instead of an education.
With this hands-on activity, my students will make Archimedean solid candles to add a splash of shape and color to their everyday lives and learn math through art!
