My Students

Picture this classroom: A student has volunteered to share her work with the class. As she shares her work, other students ask her questions like, "Is there a more efficient way?" or "How is your strategy different from the last problem?" Our 8th grade students discuss math this way!

We have an enthusiastic class of 8th grade students!

They love working in groups to find a math solution. They also love being challenged and sharing their work with the class. Our class is most motivated by a chance to present their work with a poster and visual models of the math. We have a wide range of learners with a variety of previous math experiences. They speak many different languages and have a great variety of cultures. We are part of an urban school that has challenges related to motivating students and a gap in test scores. We are working on getting students engaged in more active learning that involves higher interest activities. Poster projects in math have been very motivational to students!

My Project

My students need pencils, scissors, poster board, dry erase markers, and card stock. The materials I have requested will allow our class to make math posters! The students' favorite lesson of each unit is the "partner poster project" lesson. Students get to work with a partner to design and create a poster on a given math topic. For example, students recently made posters of quadratic relationships. They were required to represent the relationship as a graph, table and an equation. In addition, they wrote word problems that gave a context to the problems. It is fun to watch the students challenge themselves to go above and beyond. When they present their work, they demonstrate a much deeper understanding of the math concepts.

The materials for our posters will motivate students to challenge themselves, practice explaining their understanding of concepts, and encourage math discussion.

Students are so excited to share their work when they feel confident about the work they have done. They push each other to higher level thinking about the poster concepts. I am always looking forward to the learning that happens through these poster projects!
