My students need opportunities to read highly engaging text across content areas. Magazines such as TIME For Kids, Storyworks, and Scholastic News provide rich exposure to many nonfiction concepts and are motivating for kids.
It is my greatest hope that my third grade students will live a literate life! I want them to see themselves as readers of all sorts of texts. Magazines are highly motivating & help students learn about a variety of real-life concepts & current events. I hope to add them to our classroom library!
My third grade students are curious, enthusiastic, and love learning about real life concepts!
Many come form a second language background and would benefit from exposure to more vocabulary in context. Several students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school is dynamic and has a strong community. Students are valued and encouraged to be their best and treat others with respect. Teachers and staff are very hard-working.
My Project
My students need opportunities to read highly engaging text across content areas. Magazines such as TIME For Kids, Storyworks, and Scholastic News provide rich exposure to many nonfiction concepts and are motivating for kids. Students will use the magazines in many different ways. Magazines can be part of their independent reading collection, used in small groups to support literacy skills, and whole class to promote discussion about current events and concepts. Students can use magazine topics as inspiration for their blogs and connect with other classes around topics of interest. Our class utilizes Twitter and we could tweet about the issues we learned about in the magazines we read. The possibilities are endless for connecting literacy, learning, and technological tools!
Some students have negative feelings about reading and books.
Magazines are a way to hook reluctant readers into seeing all that reading has to offer! Being a reader today means being able to read across many different genres and mediums. Magazines are an important genre that students often do not have exposure to at home. Supporting this project and helping my students have access to magazines will help our class grow and will mean so much to us!
