My students need hands-on materials, including sorting sets, magnets, group games, manipulatives, and puzzles to build creativity as well as math and science skills.
Transitioning into the school environment is much easier when days are filled with fun, age-appropriate, interactive learning experiences. Numerous studies show that young children learn best through "play" and child-centered methods. My energetic students need a sensory-rich education to excel.
I currently teach one of four kindergarten classes at JG Smith Elementary in Savannah, which is a traditional Title 1 school with approximately 530 students.
Our amazing school has received the highest CCRPI rating in the district two years in a row! Nearly 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
My class now has 18 students ages 5-6, who come from various backgrounds and are each unique individuals with an eagerness to learn.
My Project
My students will use these engaging, hands-on materials daily, including during morning work time, small groups and centers, whole group activities, and even during indoor recess. These various interactive math and science materials will help me reach and teach every student while enabling them an opportunity to learn through "play”, which research shows is the most effective method for this age range. These games, puzzles, and activity sets will be so beneficial in helping our children acquire necessary skills as required by the state and national standards for kindergarten. These engaging items will greatly help the students learn and reinforce measurement, comparing/contrasting, counting, shape identification, and addition, among other critical mathematical skills. Each will also enhance their fine motor skills, as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills. Furthermore, the activities promote synergizing and/or independence while developing persistence and concentration.
The various math and sci resources requested will allow me to better reach and teach my students by using the most effective and engaging methods.
My kindergartners will be given amazing opportunities to be truly involved in the teaching and learning process. They will be able to make real-world connections while exercising their creativity to master crucial skills relating to numbers, positions, attributes, measurement, and more!
