Do you remember the first time you used a computer? Or when you got your first cell phone? The excitement you felt then has faded for students as they are exposed to these technologies everyday. In order to engage students, new technologies need to be utilized.
The 26 students in my class are extremely diverse.
They represent a wide range of cultures and speak five different languages. To meet the needs of these students, it's important to utilize technology that makes learning come alive and make abstract concepts concrete. The students in my class also come a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, therefore, their exposure to technology varies.
My Project
In an August 2007 study conducted by the University of New Brunswick, it was found that 80% of teachers involved strongly agreed that using an interactive whiteboard increased students' engagement and participation in the learning process, particularly those students with special needs. Furthermore, it was found that the use of interactive whiteboards also helped enhance student's technology proficiency (Health and Education Research Group, 2008).
In this 21st century world, no skill is more vital than digital literacy. The earlier students are exposed to technology and utilize it themselves, the greater their proficiency. Interactive whiteboards allow students to not only see technology being used but allow them to use it themselves!
Therefore, my class would like an eBeam, which is an easily installed and mobile interactive whiteboard. As well as software to help design interactive lessons to use with the eBeam.
This project will help foster a young generation's interest and proficiency in technology as well as enhance their understanding of core curricular concepts by being more engaged in lessons.
