My students need 2 tablets to better access curriculum content due to their severe intellectual and physical disabilities. This will help them develop critical life skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Each day, students work to develop critical life skills necessary for independent life. Due to physical disabilities, they often struggle to access a computer effectively. Having these tablets will allow my students to better access information presented and be more like their non-disabled peers.
Our school is located in the inner city serving about 160 students with multiple disabilities.
Our students, ages three to twenty-one years, suffer from severe and complicated physical and cognitive disabilities. Serving children beginning at a young age enables teachers, paraprofessionals, and therapists to maximize the potential within each child. After completing their education at the Baer School, young adults may go on to an adult day care environment or to a special education high school in the area. Some students go on to hold a job in a sheltered work environment. Our school has been around for over 70 years and is a staple in the special education community. School budgets are tighter than ever, so we depend greatly on the generosity of our community neighbors to help meet the needs of our special students. Our students have unique needs that cannot be met by traditional school and district funding.
My students will utilize the tablets daily to access a variety of basic skill practice. Things like daily schedule review, picture vocabulary activities, sound recognition practice, independent educational games to build leisure skills, writing exercises, functional communication device, sensory breaks, rewards, and much much more! My students have significant disabilities and require specialized educational activities so that they are able to access the content. My students also require specialized cases that protect the equipment from drops and breakages. Due to their physical disabilities these cases are essential to preserving the tablets. I pride myself in providing my students with every opportunity to have typical experiences like their same aged peers. These tablets will provide my students with just that kind of experience along with all the other academic benefits.
These tablets and their cases will make a profound impact on my students' abilities to access content, make functional academic gains, and participate in reward activities that meet both their cognitive and physical needs.
They will be able to utilize the tablets to improve their daily instruction and make more meaningful gains towards independence. The cases are essential to their usage as many of my students have erratic movements and unintentionally drop devices which they are using.
