Make Music Magical with Xylophones

My students need a six piece Orff instrument set to help increase harmonic understanding and composing opportunities in our music classroom.

My Students

Imagine walking into a music classroom and hearing children playing the harmonic tones of different Orff instruments while other children dance to their music. Notice the creativity and joy each child expresses through movement and sound as they participate in this interactive music classroom.

My school is a K-8 charter school.

I teach Kindergarten through 8th grade children who love music! No matter what age my students are, they love to play instruments but our school doesn't have much of a budget for them. Many students can't afford their own instruments and so the only musical instrument experience they get is one hour a week at school during their elementary music class.

My Project

With the addition of these six Orff instruments to my classroom, my students will be able to create and perform musical pieces in an ensemble. Two children can work together on each Orff instrument to participate in the ensemble. They will learn how to read music, improvise, play an instrument with a mallet and perform for others. They will also learn how to create a musical accompaniment for singers and dancers. Specific techniques they will learn on these Orff instruments include chord borduns, broken borduns, level borduns and crossover borduns. Such musical interactions not only boost academic performance, but benefit children emotionally and socially as well.

I feel my students are having great rhythmic experiences but are missing a fuller melodic/harmony experience.

With the barred Orff instruments we could do more with harmonic melodies and create more composing/improvisation activities. The tonal variety of the six Orff instruments, the enhanced composing ability they afford, as well as the fact that two children can play each instrument at the same time will increase my music classroom experience dramatically!
