My students need this cart with trays for our word work center during literacy centers.

Do you like being told what to do and where to go? Kindergarteners do not like it either. With this cart of 16 drawers, my students will be able to pick the exact activity they would like to do during the word work part of literacy centers. They get to start their education by taking an active role.
Our 100 year old public school building houses a very diverse student population in terms of race, language, and socioeconomic background.
This is a group of students that learns best through doing. Unfortunately, with the demands put on kindergarten students in recent years, the tools that help them to learn best have been taken out of the classroom. Kindergarten students all over the country are sitting at tables and desks for most of their day and working with just paper and pencil. I know for sure that is not how students learn best, especially my students. They learn through doing, experiencing, and taking ownership. They need to move around, enjoy, and be an active part in the activity.
My district requires two hours a day of literacy instruction in kindergarten. The favorite part of that block is literacy centers. Within literacy centers the students love the word work center. During word work students can make sight words with various manipulatives in the classroom. Instead of me assigning them what words to do and what materials to use, it is more beneficial for the students to pick what they want to do. With this cart of 16 drawers, the students will get to pick any manipulative or activity available to work on that they would like. If a student wants to make sight words with play dough, all they have to do it get the drawer, pick a spot, and get to work. The next day they can pick the same or different drawer. This cart will give students organized independence in their learning. All the activities in the drawers will require the students to work with their hands and even get to create with friends in the classroom.
This donation will do many great things for the students in my classroom, but most importantly it will give them the opportunity for the hands-on learning that they need.
This cart of 16 drawers will hold play dough, wikki stix, legos, magnets, stamps, crayons, pens, pencils, colored pencils, markers, and various other manipulatives for the students to make sight words and sentences with. The drawers will help the students pick exactly what they would like to use and make it easy for them to get.
