My Students

Many of the students in my classroom come from homes where they have access to the latest and greatest in technology. However, many of the students come from the opposite end of the spectrum and are at a disadvantage when it comes to the newest reading opportunities.

The kids I teach include 55 academically gifted first, second, and third graders.

Their IQs are over 130; in other words, they are in the top 99% of the population as far as their intelligence goes. As their teacher, it can be a challenge to keep up with all of the academic demands their giftedness places on me! They are involved in a reading program called the Schoolwide Enrichment Model- Reading (SEM-R) which is based on student choice of books. No more dry textbooks for them. They read the latest children's chapter books and non-fiction books with the most current images and information. These kids are dying to learn more and their favorite past time is reading. Many of them have ereaders at home or carry them back and forth to school in their backpacks. Some of them have never had an opportunity to read their favorite book on a handheld electronic device.

My Project

One of my goals as an educator is to expose the students to as much technology as possible. In our classroom, we have desktop and laptop computers, portable cd players, and an ipod. Students may read books or listen to them. In addition, it is very true that teachers have a lot of competition for students' attention with all of the technology that is available to kids outside of the classroom. Even though most of my students are not reluctant readers, I know all of them would be enthusiastic about their turn on a NOOK! It is just another method to turn them on to reading and to keep up with the pace of technology in the world around us. Finally, as I mentioned before, I feel very strongly about my responsibility as a teacher to level the playing field. Each one of my students deserves an equal chance to try the latest way to read by using a NOOK- no matter what their families' resources are. With the purchase of the NOOK and the carrying case, the students can have their turn.

I never imagined that my students might have an opportunity to use such a fascinating, cutting-edge reading tool in my classroom.

With our own NOOK, this teacher's wildest dreams will come true. Imagine every child having a chance to read a book with an electronic handheld device. As much as I like the smell of ink on a new book and the crack its spine makes when I first open it, I know that ereaders are the wave of the future. I want every student in my class to ride that wave!
