Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our school, we have a reading club devoted to reading "Steampunk" books. Steampunk is a type of literature that typically uses 19th century steam driven and clockwork technology to create tales of high adventure.
My students come from some of the poorest neighborhoods in our city.
We are an over 90% free/reduced breakfast/lunch school. A little over 70% of our student population is black with Hispanics making up about 20% of the kids. We are also the host school for two homeless student shelters. Books are a luxury that most cannot afford. However, they cherish the opportunity to read for fun. When we get shipment of donated books, word gets around the school quickly, and they make a bee-line for them.
My Project
My students need 20 copies of the first two books in Shelly Adina's Steampunk series "Magnificent Devices". I want the students to read for pleasure and talk about what they have read with each other. I plan to make this the beginning of a series of books by the writer Shelly Adina who writes some of the best Steampunk novels in young adult literature. The students will be able to stretch their imaginations increase their literacy all while having fun! No teacher could ask for more for them. Please make this possible.
Steampunk literature, like the Magnificent Devices series, features young characters, in this case female characters, in challenging situations.
The heroine of the series, Claire Trevelyan, is an intelligent, resourceful engineer who has to use her brains and skills to survive many adventures. She is a great model for all our students to follow. I would very much like to introduce her to my students.
