My Students

English Language Arts is a complicated subject--it includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language standards. Each year, we do our best to master all of these standards, but it can be a challenge. One solution is to spend less time reading longer texts in class and utilize articles.

My school is a Title I school and my students are very diverse.

They come from all socioeconomic classes and face a variety of learning disabilities and reading struggles. Many of the texts that our school has available are out of date and students have a hard time connecting to them.

My Project

My students need subscriptions to high quality, educational magazines including Scholastic Storyworks, Scholastic Scope, and Junior Scholastic. My students will use these Scholastic magazines to read about current events and about real-life teens. The magazines come with skill sheets, activities, and lesson plans that are aligned to the standards the students are required to master by the end of the year. Each week, students will read articles from these magazines and complete related assignments. With the variety of magazines available, students will be able to choose topics that interest them. Luckily, the topics will remain current for many months to come, so next year's students will also benefit from this project!

This project will improve classroom engagement immensely!

Students love to read articles about current events, so it will make classwork more rewarding and less of a chore. Many of the articles are about teens that are going through things similar to what they are facing at home (immigration, family struggles, fitting in) which will help them cope.
