My Students

Have you ever been in a doctor's office and stuck with outdated magazines? After reviewing our well read (restapled and taped) magazines, I realized that the publication date on most of the magazines was 2004-2005. That was before some of my second graders were even born!

My students are second graders at a diverse, low socioeconomic school.

The students love to explore, participate in hands-on activities, and read. They often "check out" books from our classroom library to read at home. The books are well cared for and returned, as are other materials in our class. Our students often do not have access to such materials at home. A community volunteer was reading a nonfiction text with one of my students at the end of the year. The text mentioned a children's magazine. The student told the community volunteer that she wasn't sure they still made children's magazines anymore. The loving volunteer purchased a children's magazine from the store and gave it to the student. The girl quickly shared it with the other members of the class.

My Project

To read, to have conversations about text, to spark further research! All of these wonderful things can be started with a simple children's magazine. I can envision children huddled on the pillows in the reading center, sharing their favorite articles in the magazines. Topics of interest can be researched and shared with the class. The magazine titles represent a wide range of reading levels so all students in my class will have access to the content. I am sure these magazines will be checked out often, just like the books from my reading center. And I can ensure the magazines will be cared for and enjoyed by future classes of students as well. How do I know? My other magazines have lasted ten years!

The gift of literacy is a gift that continues to give.

All students love getting mail and I know the excitement of receiving new magazines each month will inspire their love of literacy. My second graders and I will be eternally gratefully!
