Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Books have the power to take children to new levels. The children in our classroom display varying levels of interest and require books that do the same.
I teach in a co-taught classroom in a low-income suburb outside a large metropolitan city.
My classroom is full of students who benefit from leveled teaching that offers them many opportunities for engagement. We will be actively engaging the students in guided reading workshops throughout the year. All children would benefit greatly from having leveled readers, allowing them to successfully take part in guided reading at their ability level.
My Project
These leveled readers will be used daily for guided reading workshop. The students will have the ability to "book shop" for books at their level that also spark their interest. The students will independently read their books daily as well as reading them to a teacher. As the students practice their reading skills daily, they will become more fluid readers while also increasing their comprehension skills. The ultimate goal is that all of the students will be reading on level by the end of their kindergarten year.
This project will help students become on-level readers by the end of the year.
If they are able to finish kindergarten on level, it will decrease the amount of time they need to spend 'catching up' in 1st grade. The feeling of success from the very beginning will motivate the students to progress more each year. After all, "All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten"! (Robert Fulghum)
Ending the year as successful readers will help support the students' love of reading for a lifetime!
