My Students

My students use dictionaries on their annual high-stakes testing rather than technology so we practice all year long using the dictionary to define vocabulary words, words we find find in reading, and in content areas. They enjoy the experience.

My students are 6th-12th graders in a very small charter college prep school.

They attend accelerated classes and attend dual credit courses at our local community college. They are the leaders of the future but they do not come from wealthy families and sometimes don't have access to all the things they need to be successful.

My Project

My students have learned how to use all parts of a dictionary, from definitions to word origins to pronunciation and usage. We have weekly vocabulary lessons as well as run across words all the time in our reading, for pleasure and content reading, and for general curiosity.

I have requested sturdy, hard-back dictionaries.

My paperback dictionaries lasted five years so I look forward to a long life for these, assisting an number of students in their progress toward adulthood.
