My students need 6 hog feeders, 1 set of clippers, 1 two-way sorting panel, and 6 pressure nipples to learn our animal science standards and develop positive character traits. This equipment is needed to keep animals at the school.
Not all students learn by reading books or being lectured to. In fact, "hands-on" learners are out of luck in today's fast-paced, test driven classrooms. Not in my class. I take the students outside and introduce agriculture in a fun and interactive manner that leaves them wanting more.
As a connection teacher, almost everyone in the school will come through my room each year.
I have every kind of student in class from special needs to gifted, but by teaching and assessing through projects and fun activities, the students' ability levels will not adversely affect their grade.
My Project
I am requesting 6 hog feeders, 1 set of clippers, 1 two-way sorting panel, and 6 pressure nipples to learn our animal science standards and develop positive character traits. This equipment is needed to keep animals at the school. These materials will be used in our school barn. The barn will primarily be used for up to 25 students to keep a livestock project at the school when their home situations prevent keeping the animal at their house. The school farm is not a new concept. In fact every high school in our county and three middle schools already have one. The learning that will take place is not only students with livestock developing character traits, but also every agriculture class will get the benefit of working with the livestock at school. Donating these feeders and water valves/nipples to our program will make this dream a reality for our students.
We already have gardens and plans for a greenhouse at the school to teach the students real-life plant science and horticulture.
The barn will give our students the same opportunities other students in the county have at other schools. Not only will some FFA members be able to keep livestock animals at the school, but also every single student at our school will benefit by having class in this barn and learning the importance of agriculture.
