Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students scoring proficient or above: Math: 1.6%, English: 12.4%. Percent of the student body on free and reduced-price lunch: 77% . The numbers of this public school indicate a need for the classroom to be driven by literacy to best prepare the students to reach college, but also to FINISH college.
The most important life-changing opportunity students should have access to is simply, the power of choice.
In order for my students to compete for the chance to choose their pathways, they must be able to engage in a rigorous environment. My classroom will provide them the space to develop into young adults who are able to think critically about, not only chemistry, but about how to live a life in which they will be able to have options. Passing a rigorous course such as chemistry can inspire students with confidence and I hope to run a classroom that will equip them to do so.
My Project
This year I am looking to put a great emphasis on literacy within science... because what's the point of learning the science if we cannot adequately express ourselves with the necessary vocabulary and comprehension to communicate it? For the 2012-2013 school year we will be putting a greater emphasis on learning literacy skills in science, including the power of annotation, the building of better vocabulary, and the ability to become a stronger writer and thus a stronger scientist. I will be creating stations for groups of students to use while interpreting passages from rigorous materials drawn from the MCAT, SAT II, and the California Standardized Tests.
OUR VISION FOR OUR CLASSROOM: "Students will be driven by the desire to become the best possible version of themselves. They will leave the classroom with a better understanding of how the world works around them, how to get to and stay in college, and how to best represent their community and school with pride."
These are just basics... calculators, dictionaries, pens, highlighters, whiteboards... nothing too fancy.
Students must learn how to read from text, interpret the world around them, and to consume the information that is available to them! Please help us reach our goal by the time school opens for a strong start to our school year!
