Literacy Is Unattainable Without Proper Resources

My students need their own copy of this book, "The Lord of the Flies", so they can bring it home with them and fully engage in the text.

My Students

Most of my students are reading 2-3 grade levels behind where they need to be as sophomores. As a class, we engage with rigorous texts that push my students' thinking. The only setback is that my school doesn't have enough copies of the books for students to bring home with them.

My school is a Title I school in Tulsa Oklahoma, with 100% of the students qualifying for free/reduced lunch.

Most of my students live in poverty and rely on a quality education to break this cycle of poverty. As mentioned before, the majority of my students are reading below grade level. All of my students are amazing, brilliant, and positive young scholars who simply need the resources and support to be successful in school and in life.

My Project

If this project is funded, my students will each have a copy of Lord of the Flies to bring home with them. It's near impossible for my students to fully engage in a rigorous text if they are only exposed to the text for 30 minutes in class. Furthermore, most of my students don't own a new book. Purchasing these books for my students will be a special occasion for them that will hopefully reignite a passion for reading.

Please help me provide my students with the same opportunity that other students in higher income schools already have.

A students' zip code should not determine the quality of education they receive. I will do everything in my power to provide them that education and getting them a brand new copy of a book is a great start.
