Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you have trouble reading when you were a child or know a child who does? And no matter how many times the teacher taught and reviewed the sounds, when it came time to put them all together to read a word you or someone you know just couldn't do it? Well that's what's happening to my students.
My students are pre-K and TK level English language learners attending a public school in California.
They are kinesthetic, auditory, and visual learners who are not given a chance to learn through these modalities. They need to see the way reading works and sounds through the use of tactile manipulatives, such as the iPad2, which addresses all 3 modalities. They come from low income families in which many times both parents work in order to maintain their household. Since my students are English language learners they need as many visual aids as possible to make their learning more meaningful and comprehensible. They need to explicitly see how sounds can be physically manipulated to form new words, and in turn discover common word patterns that will aide them in reading. Unfortunately, at home my students don't have technological access due to economic hardships. The only place they are able to access technology is at school and our school is limited due to severe budget cuts.
My Project
I know that the iPad2 is a technological device that will help my Pre-K and Transitional Kinder level students accomplish their reading goals in an exciting and interactive way. There are many educational applications and websites I can program into the iPad2 that will help them manipulate sounds, move them around to form words, and read and listen to stories through a visual library application. Currently, I am unable to provide my students with the technological access needed to accomplish these goals because our classroom has two computers that freeze every time my students try to access websites that provide interactive activities that will help them become successful readers. If our project is funded my students, who are reading at pre-K and Transitional Kinder levels, will have the opportunity to access reading applications that will help them blend words, identify initial, medial and ending sounds, and listen to stories modeled by skilled readers.
It is very important that our project get funded in order for me to be able to provide my pre-K and Transitional Kinder reading level students with kinesthetic, auditory, and visual opportunities needed to become literate.
With your generous support my students will not only learn essential pre-K and Transitional Kinder reading skills, but will also learn how to use technology. This is extremely essential in order for them to be able to compete with students who are technologically advanced.
