This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a STEAM school in Riverside, California. We are a charter school that strives to close the gap for undeserved students in East Riverside.

My classroom is a busy and booming place!

My 30 students are nearly all at or above grade-level, with only a handful still working toward second grade standards. My students come from a diverse background and represent a variety of cultures and backgrounds.

My Project

As many of you know listening centers are an important part of English/language arts centers. Listening centers provide support of oral language, allow students to perform one-to-one correspondence with words they hear and see, and boost speaking functions of early childhood students. Listening centers also expose students to non-fiction and scientific materials, which can be slightly above "just right" reading levels and include abstract concepts. Hearing and seeing "frustration level" text is a successful way of guiding students to more advanced reading.

We currently do not have a listening center in our classroom.

My goal this trimester is to gather the components we need for our students to have one. I believe this addition to our ELA centers will boost ELA learning.
