Do you remember learning to read? Or do you remember learning another language? The students in my class are learning to do both at the same time! We value our bilingualism and would love to see our skills grow.
We are an awesome bunch of active 2nd grade students in a dual language immersion program in an urban school in Wisconsin.
Some of us are are native English speakers and some of us are native Spanish speakers but we are ALL learning in both languages--because we think being bilingual is pretty great!
My Project
We would love to have a listening center, as well as books to listen to, available to help us grow as readers and as bilingual students. By listening to books and reading along, students will be able to increase their vocabulary, oral language skills, reading skills and improve reading fluency. It is a great opportunity to hear correctly modeled language, which in turn will have positive effects on oral language, reading and writing. It engages students with literature and helps foster their love of books.
I started a new classroom of dual language immersion this year with $100.
The school's resources available to bilingual classrooms is very small. It is important to me, the students, their families, and to many in the community, that ALL students have access to materials that will help improve the quality of their education. The improvements that we can make to our language, reading, and writing through this project, will help us toward our goal of bilingualism and biliteracy.
