My students need great read-along audio stories to kick back and listen while in my listening center which will build fluency and comprehension skills in reading.

My Students

Kicking back and listening to a story is what my own five year old son loves to do the most. In my first grade classroom, my students are not as lucky to have as many literacy opportunities at their own homes. It is my duty to provide my little first graders with many chances to enjoy literature.

My first graders attend a Title I school in Texas.

Their parents are hard-workers that have to make every dime stretch in order to put food on the table. Most are not able to buy school supplies and are on free/reduced lunch and breakfast. Unfortunately, literacy opportunities or print rich environments are not in most of their homes. They need access to as much literature at school as possible. Many are ESL learners that are practicing their English skills as well as learning the basics of becoming a reader.

My Project

When sitting and listening to a great or familiar story, a student is practicing fluency, sight word recognition, print awareness, and comprehension which are all essential keys to becoming successful readers. From the struggling readers to the most fluent readers in a classroom will love to sit back and enjoy a great story without the pressure of having to read it by themselves. Students will also be able to practice retelling a story or showing any one of the major comprehension skills that are necessary to reading. For an ESL learner, listening to a story and seeing the print will help with their vocabulary and higher language acquisition that they need to become more proficient in their new language. These four book sets for our listening center will provide these opportunities in our classroom.

Students will always be thankful for having more books to choose to listen and read.

These read-aloud books on cd will make a tremendous difference in a first grader's reading abilities. It will give them the independence and ability to say, "I CAN READ!"
