My students love to experience science! We are up out of our seats doing science all year. My goal is to have every student leave having a positive experience with science and feel like a true scientist.
I teach 8th grade science in a school of approximately 730 7th and 8th graders.
My students include English language learners and students with special needs. All of my students are enthusiastic learners! My school is focusing on getting our students prepared for continuing their education and getting ready for the workplace. We are starting the process of implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and encouraging STEM learning.
My Project
These materials will allow my students to experience in small groups many facets of light and waves. The "Light Blox" kit will give my students the opportunity to manipulate colored light sources, lenses, and mirrors. They will be able to explore color, shadows, vision, reflection, and refraction. By doing this, they will hopefully see the applications to current technology and their lives. STEM learning at its best!
My hope is that these materials will give my students a greater understanding of how their eyes work and where the concepts of waves, shadows, reflection, and refraction are used in their daily lives.
I also hope that by experiencing hands on science as a middle school student that they will continue their science education in their academic careers. Donating to this project will not only benefit my 150 students, but also the students of the other teachers I work with as we share materials.
