My students need leveled books to be improve their reading skills. My Bilingual students also need a listening station to help them with fluency and comprehension.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every morning we start our day with a class pledge (a motivational poem). I take pride in reading Magic Tree House series with 1st graders and by the end of the 1st semester most of them want to read the books on their own. My students lose the fear of checking out chapter books from the library.
My students are always eager to learn.
I have a mixed class of all English and some bilingual kids. They enjoy being introduced to chapter books in my class and I like that they lose the fear of checking out chapter books from the library. My campus administrators are very supportive of any project or programs that we would like to implement. Our principal likes having activities for the students to get involved; such as UIL, dance, sports, and this year I am introducing book club. Our administrative staff have coordinated a community garage sale. Many of our teachers donated clothes and other items to sell. All of our teachers gladly came to work on a Saturday to help. Many of our students and parents were able to take advantage of the items on sale. Several of our staff members bought items for students that did not have money. I am fortunate to work with such kind hearted people everyday.
My Project
As a child, I was a struggling reader. I did not learn how to read until 4th grade. I have vowed to not let that happen to any of my students. With the leveled readers, the struggling reader will have an opportunity to choose a book on their level. Other students will be able to get books not only on their level but will be able to be challenged by getting the next level up. I am including a listening center for my classroom so that my struggling reader can develop fluency. By listening to the stories the students will become familiar with the words and proper rhythm we use to read. This items would help tremendously in my classroom.
These items will help my students not only students learn how to read and comprehend, but it will also help build their confidence towards reading and education.
Having a child with confidence creates a mind set that they can accomplish anything they set their mind to do. The late Dr. Seuss wrote,"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go" I want my students to go far.
