This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss
My first graders love to choose books at their own reading levels.
We have readers ranging from beginning level A to fourth grade level P. This project will also help the kindergarten reading groups that come to my room for after-school tutoring. I hope to organize our leveled library so it is more accessible to students, classroom aides, Reading Recovery teachers, and reading corps volunteers.
My Project
My ultimate goal is to have students create their own "book bags" for independent reading. They will be able to go to the mobile storage cart, reference their guided reading level, then pick books to bring to their seat and read each week. By reading these books independently, students will be able to actively engage with sight words, decoding strategies, and comprehension skills.
This project will make a difference by individualizing reading instruction for each of my students.
By choosing their own books at their independent level, they will take ownership of their learning.
