Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.”
This is the motto that students and teachers strive to uphold on a daily basis at our elementary school. Our students are taught to be active participants in their learning process.
We are a K-6 school that is part of the Mapleton school district, located in Denver, Colorado.
We serve a high needs, high poverty area, and many of our families qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program. Families rely on us as a school to provide resources and experiences for their children. As a school, we rely on outside sources to supplement customized learning for our students.
Our 6th graders are hardworking, deserving students who will benefit greatly from their field trip to the Cal-wood Education Center. They are an eclectic group of individuals who have much to offer to each other. As a group, they bring out the best in one another and continually work together as a cohesive group. Our 6th graders are enthusiastic learners who are constantly striving to excel in their learning.
My Project
Through this project, we hope to give students a unique, hands-on learning experience that connects classroom learning with new situations. The trip is a three-day, two-night experience where they will have the opportunity to dig deeper in their learning and understanding of our Westward Expansion unit. The awe-inspiring property includes acres of forested land, many species of wildlife and plants, nine miles of trails, meadows, peaks, ponds, streams, a waterfall, a 1901 homestead, a Native American tipi, once-active mines, camping areas, cabins, and a lodge. The program includes hiking, team building activities, and field observation, along with lessons directly relating to content taught in the classroom such as the Gold Rush, the Ute Indian culture, and life as a pioneer.
Students will pay $20 of the program fee, but we will rely on fundraising for the remaining $122.
This project will impact our students' lives in a big way!
They will have the opportunity to make real life connections in addition to their classroom learning. Students will be challenged both physically and mentally as they spend time outdoors, away from home and school. This unique field trip will be an experience that many of our students would not have the opportunity to participate in otherwise.
