My students could sit for hours putting together Lego kits. I am requesting Lego sets for an afterschool GATE class so my students will have ample time to create and build Lego settings of the Hobbit, Harry Potter and the Friends' Lego sets.
I teach 21 wonderful first graders in a small school in rural Northern California.
I have very eager students who love to learn. My students love to play games, do art and science projects, and write stories. Living in the state of California, my students have been dealt the short end of the stick. Funding for classrooms in California has been dramatically cut and it has filtered down to the students by limiting purchases for the classroom to basic supplies.
My Project
My students need 11 Lego kits including Harry Potter, the Hobbit and the Friends' Legos. I am planning on running an after school GATE class this year. Our class will focus on using Legos to build a Harry Potter land, a Hobbit set and the Friends' Lego sets. These Legos will be used to help students think outside the box. They will be using spatial skills to help them follow the directions and build the Lego kits.
In addition to building, the kits are related to literature. Students will read the the stories of Harry Potter and the Hobbit and do book reports on setting, character, and plot. The book reports and Lego kits will be put on display in the library.
By providing these Lego kits, students will build on skills of spatial awareness, study story elements, and have props to accompany good literature.
Having the finished projects placed in the library for all to see will continue learning beyond the GATE class. It will provide learning to all who read and interact with the finished projects.
