My students need tools to help focus their minds and calm their bodies to be ready to learn. Other students in the class need books to build empathy and understanding.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The mind of an autistic student is a beautiful mystery that takes time and creativity to unleash. In our financially restricted urban school resources are limited to create for these students a safe and fun place to learn, and yet they are already showing growth, generosity, and curiosity.
My special education students receive help from me (their learning and autistic support teacher) and get to be with their peers in the general education classroom for most of the day.
They love to hug their friends, make people laugh, and are always finding cool objects to inspect. Their classmates are also learning about how differences teach us new things. We are all learning to support each other as we learn!
My Project
My students with autism will be able to use these resources to meet their sensory input needs, learn calming techniques when they are upset, and use fidget tools to help them get out energy AND interact with learning at the same time!
The rest of the class will use social stories to build understanding and empathy of what it means to have autism. They will learn about helping each other and that differences make our classroom a better, more interesting place. Everyone will benefit from these exciting resources!

They will be more invested in their learning and their classroom with tools that grab their physical and mental interest. My class as a whole will benefit from the social stories that not only help them understand and empathize with their friends with autism, but also will help them interact with empathy to a world with all sorts of different, and still valuable, people.
