My students are special needs students. Each student has an individual schedule. We can have up to ten students and three adults working one on one or in groups of two or three. We work on daily needs, functional reading and math, sensory needs, and individual IEP goals.
Our students have multiply disabilities.
Some of our students are autistic and some are nonverbal. All of our students have sensory issues. The school is a middle school for grades sixth and seventh; however, our students are below grade level. We work on functional skills and try to provide students with as much independence possible for their abilities.
One big challenge for these students is being able to be sit still during instruction times or working at a table. Several teachers, even in regular classrooms, have had success with using exercise balls instead of chairs. These balls would give my students the sensory input they need in order to learn.
These fitness balls will help my students with their sensory needs while helping them to focus.
While providing this input, my students will be able to improve their learning. In some cases it will also cut down on disruptive behavior.
