Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember when you made clothes for your dolls or watched someone sew on a button? Maybe you needed to add a patch to your Boy/Girl Scout uniform? Well, it is my pleasure to introduce my students to these skills in a safe learning environment.
My students are from low income homes.
Many of them are first or second generation immigrants who thrive in a Life Skills classroom. They need to master these skills, as they are dying arts. One day, it will save them money in clothing repair, as well as introduce them to a potential career! They truly love the sewing unit because they feel satisfaction and pride upon project completion.
My Project
Not only do my students learn and master the sewing skills presented to them, but they become teen teachers! They help each others problem solve; fix tangles, assist a less skilled partner and communicate through questions and answers. They do this in sewing circles without any prompting from me, as the facilitator. It is really inspirational and incredible to witness the progress once they get going! We need felt and embroidery floss, so that the students can create unique handmade stuffed animals, bookmarks and roll up organizers. Once students make these projects, they are masters of their new skill...sewing!
Sewing is a life skill that is taken for granted.
It can cost anywhere from $7.00 to $30.00 to have a professional repair a button or a hem! My goal is to ensure that my students can do these repairs later in life and be independent. Independence is the key to success! Help me get these students to build confidence in their ability to take care of themselves.
